To start with the project, we are required to find an individual around SS15 and interview him/her about work, life and value which might relate to certain contexts or issues. My group consist of 4 members which are Chee Sin, Yao Yue, Shiuan Feng and me. We initially have a discussion about who to interview. However, we later decided to interview Uncle Cobbler who is located in front of the GoodFriend cafe.

  6. How many hours do you work in a day?

  7. How many customers per day?

Necessary Questions

  1. Do you think the younger generation will appreciate the craftsmanship of this industry?

  2. Do you think cobblers in Malaysia have any significance?

  3. Do you think this industry will die out in the future?

Other People Insights

To make my context more relatable to others, I conducted interviews with five individuals to gather their insights. Since my target audience is young adults, all of the people I interviewed were between 19 and 24 years old. Based on the insights I gathered, I refined my topic from "Dilettante vs. Connoisseur" – a comparison of trend value among younger generations – to "Industrial Evolution: Footwear Repair" – a comparison of the same industry across different generations.

Key Takeaways

Reflection

  1. Living in a qualitative education system, a stable economy and having opportunities to try out new stuff is bliss compared to the old generation. But the younger generation now tends to dissatisfy easily, making a fuss about an imaginary illness.

  1. The generation now will mostly opt for trendy sneakers rather than a pair of durable and sustainable shoes for daily use. The main reason why the sneaker market is booming now.

  1. Traditional craftsmanship of this industry will eventually replace with a more advanced version to fit the current market needs. The consumer will not repair to extend lifespan solely but also consider second-hand resale value.

Inspiration - Austin Kleon

Austin Kleon’s mini zine artwork mostly inspired the design of my zine, his works mostly were photo prints and cut-off words and sentences. I took inspiration from him, instead of using photo prints, I use illustrations and handwritten words, and because my zine topic is about the comparison of the footwear repair industry. I’ve applied two different illustration styles in my zine to bring out the contrast in graphics: value sketching and flat colouring.

Content Arrangements

The first layout planning, titled as "Dilettante vs Connoisseur", a comparison of trend value among younger generations. This version is before asking for other insights; the second layout planning, titled as "Industrial Evolution: Footwear Repair”, a comparison of the same industry but in different generations. This version is after asking for other insights.

Sketches (1st Version)

Initially, I was not sure about my first topic “Dilenttante vs Connoisseur” because I felt the context was too shallowed to be covered and the tone of voice is very ironic to my target audience. So in the first draft I use meme pictures to draft out my ideations.

Sketches (2nd Version)

In this version of sketches, I confirmed my topic as “Industrial Evolution: Footwear Repair”. As you can see, there are a lot of compare and contrast, and also there were memes in it. This is to let the visual relates to my target audience more.

Plan A to Plan B

Due to sizing matters, I couldn’t print all in a double-sided A2 size as expected, I have to separate it into 4 double-sided A4 sizes and stitch some of the folded parts together manually. The problem I’m having initially is how should I combine the side of the page together without using the old-fashioned way (taping it together). I came out with a solution which is sewing them together, the following shows my stitching method experimentation.
